Gentofte Main Library Reopens with 99-Destination Sorting System

Gentofte Main Library in Denmark inaugurated a new automated sorting system from Lyngsoe Systems Library Solutions on April 22, 2026, marking the library's first step into automated material handling.

The library serves as the central library for 28 municipal libraries in the Capital Region, making efficient material handling critical to daily operations. The project was funded by a 10 million DKK investment from Gentofte Municipality, covering both the sorting system and the building work required to accommodate it.

The installation features two patron self-return stations, allowing users to return materials directly to the sorting system, alongside a dedicated staff induction for library personnel. From there, 99 sort destinations route materials into a seamless mix of collection bins, book carts, and totes, giving staff precise control over how items are distributed across the library's collections and branches, including other libraries across Denmark.

The system spans two floors of the library's architect-designed building, originally designed by Henning Larsen in 1985. Integrating a modern sorting system into the existing architecture required close coordination, and Lyngsoe was the only vendor able to provide a solution that met the library's full requirements.

"Gentofte had a clear vision for how the system should fit into their space and serve their patrons," says Mogens Olsen, Account Manager at Lyngsoe Systems. "Working within an architect-designed building across two floors is always a creative challenge, and we're happy that it all came together."

"At Gentofte Main Library, we have in 2025–2026, in collaboration with Lyngsoe and ARCnordic, had a thoroughly designed and functional sorting system installed across two floors. Gentofte Main Library was designed by Henning Larsen in 1985, and to everyone's satisfaction, we have succeeded in integrating a sorting system into the building's specific architecture, so that it looks as though it has always been there," says Lene Rud Christensen, Administrative Manager at Gentofte Main Library.
