North Lincolnshire Libraries: Making Library Services Easier and More Accessible for Everyone
With new self-service technology and smarter ways of working, North Lincolnshire Libraries is creating a more welcoming and accessible experience for patrons, while giving staff more time to focus on their communities.
A Fresh Approach to Self-Service
Libraries are about much more than borrowing books. They're places where people come to learn, connect, and feel part of their community. And making those experiences as easy and welcoming as possible helps ensure libraries continue to meet the needs of the people they serve.
For North Lincolnshire Libraries, this meant taking a fresh look at how technology could better support both patrons and staff.
Having recently introduced a new Library Management System, the library service was ready to update its self-service equipment too. The aim was to make everyday transactions simpler, improve accessibility, and create a more enjoyable experience for everyone visiting its libraries.
“Having recently installed a new Library Management System in North Lincolnshire, we were looking for a modern, reliable self-service solution that offered improved functionality, enhanced accessibility, and a more intuitive user experience,” explains Emma Wilkinson, Libraries Development Manager at North Lincolnshire Libraries.
Making Self-Service Work for Everyone
In June 2026, we installed a number of Lyngsoe LibDeco™ self-service kiosks across eight North Lincolnshire Libraries locations: Scunthorpe, Winterton, Ashby, Riddings, Barton, Crowle, Epworth and Brigg.
The installation included a mixture of F20 height-adjustable kiosks and T10 tabletop kiosks, offering the flexibility to suit different library spaces and customer needs.
One of the biggest priorities was making self-service more accessible. With height-adjustable features, patrons can use the F20 kiosks at a level that's comfortable for them. This makes it easier for more people to borrow and return items independently, without needing to ask for assistance.
And the response so far has been very positive.
“The kiosks have been very well received by both customers and staff. Customers find them easy to use, and the modern design has helped create a positive first impression within our libraries,” says Emma.
“The height-adjustable screens have been particularly beneficial in supporting accessibility, ensuring that a wider range of users can comfortably access library services independently.”
More Than a Place to Borrow Books
The new kiosks are also helping North Lincolnshire Libraries connect with patrons in another way.
With Lyngsoe Digital Poster™, the kiosks do more than support borrowing and returning. When they're not being used for self-service, they display eye-catching digital content, turning otherwise idle screens into a way to share what's happening at the library.
From upcoming events and activities to library news and community information, the displays help catch patrons’ attention and encourage them to discover more of what the library has to offer.
“The Digital Poster displays have also given us a valuable platform to promote events, services, and community information in an engaging and highly visible way,” Emma explains.
Making the kiosks feel like part of the library was just as important as what they could do. North Lincolnshire Libraries designed its own customized backpanels, reinforcing its visual identity while helping the equipment fit naturally into the welcoming library environment.
“We wanted the kiosks to be highly visible and inviting, encouraging self-service while complementing the overall customer experience rather than appearing as standalone pieces of technology.”
Less Time on Routine Tasks, More Time for Patrons
Behind the scenes, North Lincolnshire Libraries is also looking at ways to make life easier for its staff.
The library service has recently introduced Lyngsoe Library Clerk™ to help simplify everyday operations, including stock checking. These routine tasks are essential to keeping a library running smoothly, but they can also take valuable time away from supporting patrons.
By making these processes more efficient, the library service aims to give staff more freedom to focus on the parts of their jobs that make the biggest difference.
“The hope is that long term this will free up staff, to do more important tasks – helping and advising customers, organizing more events and activities, and keeping North Lincolnshire libraries at the heart of our community,” says Emma.
Building Libraries Around Their Communities
The new kiosks and Library Clerk are part of a wider program to improve digital infrastructure across North Lincolnshire Libraries, supported by public funding from Arts Council England.
For patrons, that means easier access to services and a better library experience. For staff, it means the potential to spend less time on repetitive tasks and more time helping, advising, and engaging with people in their communities.
And for North Lincolnshire Libraries, it's about making sure its libraries continue to be places where everyone feels welcome and supported.
North Lincolnshire Council would like to thank Arts Council England for its continued support and investment in the library service.
